At age 15, I spent my summer at the Aspen Music Festival. It still rates as one of my best summers, ever. I made fast friends with a community of amazing, talented high school kids, many of whom were already attending Juilliard's Pre-College School. Some flew in to New York every Friday from as far away as Illinois to attend Pre college school on Saturday! For me, NOT being in the glamorous city of New York with my fun friends was just not an option. Without a doubt, I had my heart set on getting into Juilliard.. Never before in my life had I ever felt such a deep, burning, desire for anything.

What I Would Love to Teach My Kids About Money

I love to manage money and if I could give my kids the right tools to keep their financial lives on track, I think it would be a great gift. I don't want to make them obsessive, just careful. Until they get good financial training going in the schools, it's up to the parents to set their kids on the right path. My goal is to teach the kids that money is earned, doesn't grow on trees and is more easily spent than earned. Put at least 10% in savings, more is better, and wait a week before buying something you want. If you still want it after a week then you must really want it.

The great minds in Washington have figured out that the way to get us out of this recession is to have the consumer spend the way he used to. The consumer is not as dumb as experts in Washing believe. Homes are no longer ATM machines. Credit card companies have tightened their standards and many have increased interest rates. Even if a buyer wants a new car with the "Cash For Clunkers" program he must have super excellent credit to qualify. All of this and more has contributed to a change in the savings rate from minus 1% to plus 7%. Believe it or not the whole world depends on the USA consumer spending.

A Neat Trick For Paying Your Bills on Time But Not Too Early

I learned this from my mother in law of all people. We're a farm family and have to write a lot of big checks from our operating loan. If you send the payment early that means you're paying interest on that big payment sooner than you would have to. But, I don't like to think I may miss a payment due date and get a late fee, so I tend to write out my check payments right away when I get the bill. But I don't want to send them now, I want to wait. So here's what she taught me. Write the due date on the bottom corner of your envelope. Address, stamp and seal the envelope just as if you're going to send it right away, but write the due date on the corner so you know not to mail it yet.
